A rich heritage, backed by over 100 years of foodservice tradition.
U.S. Foodservice Minnesota is located in Plymouth, a suburb of Minneapolis. The building itself was built in 1987 as a prototype "L shaped" distribution center that would serve as a model for future designs. Under the ownership of Sara Lee Corporation, the division opened its doors as PYA/Monarch.
In 1989, the Minnesota distribution center was part of a leveraged buyout, forming one of the original divisions of JP Foodservice. The company continued successfully, and in 1997, merged with Rykoff/Sexton, creating an even larger presence in the market, now known as U.S. Foodservice.
Westlund's Provisions, a successful local meat and produce company in South Saint Paul, was acquired by U.S. Foodservice in 1999. Known as a premier supplier of Certified Angus Beef, Westlund's was integrated to supply high quality meats to U.S. Foodservice Minnesota, and renamed Stock Yards Meat Packing Company.
Equipment and Supply giant Superior Products was acquired and renamed Next Day Gourmet, offering U.S. Foodservice customers instant access to thousands of new items. In April, 2000, U.S. Foodservice itself was acquired by international food provider Royal Ahold, based in the Netherlands.
As part of Royal Ahold, U.S. Foodservice continued to grow in 2001, and acquired Alliant Foodservice. With this acquisition, U.S. Foodservice became the largest and most versatile foodservice distribution company in the Minnesota market. In 2006, North Star Foodservice was created, specifically to work with high-profile national and regional chains. In Minnesota, the former Alliant Foodservice division in Eagan was renamed a North Star division.
In mid-2007, Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, Inc. (CD&R), and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. (KKR) acquired U.S. Foodservice from Royal Ahold, marking the latest chapter in the elaborate history of U.S. Foodservice.
After numerous mergers, acquisitions, and name changes, U.S. Foodservice has become one of the leading foodservice distributors in the country. Throughout these changes, the rich heritage and local "mindset" of U.S. Foodservice has allowed it to be a success story within the Minnesota market.
